Defendant faces new charges after attacking a Nevada judge in court, which was caught on video

In Las Vegas, a courtroom drama unfolded as a defendant in a felony battery case attempted to convince a Nevada judge of his reformation before sentencing. However, the situation took a dramatic turn when the defendant leaped over a defense table and the judge’s bench, sparking a violent altercation with court officials and attorneys. Recorded by courtroom video, the disturbing scene showed Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus falling backward as the defendant flung himself onto her, resulting in a struggle that left both parties injured but not requiring hospitalization, according to courthouse officials.

The defendant, identified as Deobra Delone Redden, was subsequently detained on $54,000 bail, facing numerous charges, including battery on a protected person. After refusing to appear for new charges the following day, Redden’s next court appearance was rescheduled for Jan. 9. Redden’s forcible removal from the judge by multiple court and jail officers and courtroom staff led to injuries, including a courtroom marshal who required hospital treatment. Reflecting on the chaotic incident, Richard Scow, the chief county district attorney prosecuting Redden, expressed the difficulty in responding to the sudden escalation.

Redden’s extensive criminal record, primarily comprising violent offenses, prompted Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson to advocate for his detention without bail, citing him as a significant danger to the community and a flight risk. Despite his plea for leniency during the sentencing hearing, wherein he emphasized his commitment to doing the right thing, Redden’s subsequent outburst and resistance to being handcuffed further underscored concerns about his behavior. Records reveal Redden’s prior incarceration in Nevada for domestic battery, and his evaluation and competence to stand trial in the recent battery case before accepting a reduced charge. Judge Holthus, a former career prosecutor, transitioned to the state court bench in 2018, bringing over 27 years of legal experience to her role.
