Nevada judge is back to work a day after being attacked by defendant who jumped atop her
In Las Vegas, a Nevada judge returned to work shortly after being assaulted by a defendant during a felony battery case, an incident captured on courtroom video. The defendant, Deobra Redden, was seen charging forward and leaping over the judge’s bench after realizing he was facing a prison sentence. Despite suffering injuries, Judge Mary Kay Holthus resumed her duties the following day and is set to preside over Redden’s rescheduled sentencing on Monday morning, according to Chief Judge Jerry Wiese.
During a news conference, Wiese shared a statement from Holthus expressing gratitude for the support and brave actions of those who intervened during the attack. The altercation, which resulted in a violent struggle, required the defendant to be restrained by court officials and officers. While the judge sustained injuries, including hair grabbing, she was evaluated but not hospitalized. Michael Lasso, her law clerk, played a crucial role in subduing the assailant, with Wiese commending his swift response.
Redden, who faces multiple charges, including battery on a protected person, was detained on bail following the assault but refused to appear in court the next day. Prosecutors highlighted Redden’s history of violent offenses, advocating for his detention without bail due to concerns about community safety. Despite Redden’s plea for leniency during the sentencing hearing, where he emphasized his commitment to doing the right thing, his subsequent outburst led to his arrest. Records indicate Redden’s prior conviction for domestic battery and his competency to stand trial in the recent case. Holthus, a seasoned prosecutor with over 27 years of legal experience, assumed her role as a state court judge in 2018.
